Day 1: Arrival in Thimphu

Arrive at Paro International Airport and transfer to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, Visit the National Memorial Chorten, Tashichho Dzong, and the Buddha Dordenma statue, Explore the local markets and shops in Thimphu. Overnight stay in Thimphu.

Day 01 Six Senses Lodge -Thimphu

Once you reach Paro International Airport, our representative will greet you there in the traditional way.  After enjoying the moment of a Bhutanese-style warm welcome, your journey will begin from the airport to Thimphu, the capital city and one of the main tourist attractions in Bhutan.

The unique thing about this city remains that even in the 21st century, it has no traffic lights. Thimphu is a scenic place surrounded by lush green valleys covered with blue pine forests and sculpted with temples (Lhakhang) and monasteries.

On reaching Thimphu after a long but scenic drive, you will check into the Six Senses property at Thimphu. On the first day, we recommend that travelers undertake light activities to avoid over-exhaustion. You can enjoy lunch at the property while you acclimatize to the altitude variation.

The pool at our property offers a splendid view of the surrounding valley that you can enjoy while swimming in it.  You will also get a clear glimpse of the renowned Buddha Dordenma from the poolside as well.

Day 02 Six Senses Lodge – Thimphu

The next day morning, which is your second day in Bhutan and the first day for outdoor visits in Thimphu, our guide, will accompany you to Buddha Dordenma after breakfast. There, you will discover artistically arranged smaller size (8 to 12 inches) Buddha statues within the larger statues.

After beholding and admiring the elegance of the tallest Buddha statues, you will start for Changangkha Lhakhang (a 12th-century structure on a Ridge) followed by a visit to the National Textile Museum showcasing exclusive several textile artifacts.

If you like, we can arrange for an authentic lunch experience at one of the local restaurants, keeping your culinary preference in mind. After lunch, you will reach the Folk Heritage Museum to witness the traditional lifestyle of Bhutanese households.

Next, you will reach the sixteenth-century astrology school, PangriZampa Lhakhang, situated in the northern part of the valley. here, you can listen to the regaling tales about Bhutan’s unifier, Zhabdrung.

The next spot in your day’s itinerary would be the fortress, Thimphu Dzong.  The head of Bhutan’s government, Tashichho Dzong sits here.

Therefore, many refer to this place as the seat of the throne having a throne room and office rooms of Bhutan’s Dragon King (Druk Gyalpo). This should be the last of the day’s activity unless you decide to stay near the dzong until dusk to behold it in its illuminated glory.

 

Day 03 Six Senses Lodge Thimphu to  Six Senses Lodge Punakha –Paddy Field  And Farmhouse

On the third day morning, you will head for your next destination, Punakha, after breakfast. However, you can always seek the blessings of the resident monk of our property before leaving for good health and fortune. Leave early to behold the most breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mighty Himalayas after reaching Dochula Pass (3050 meters).

The one hundred and eight chortens on the valley and the cloud-laden mountain tops create a magnificent view you will remember for a long time. Descend to Punakha to enjoy its mild-cold climate popular in Bhutanese as a perfect winter destination.

The entire journey will take around 2.5 hours. For the rest of the day, you will mostly relax and enjoy the serene surrounding of the Six Senses property at Punakha.

However, to add some magic element to your stay here, you can lend an ear to the stories of the “Divine madman”, Drukpa Kuenley. The spectacular views of the valley will always remain within your eyesight as you would dine in the property’s facilities.

 

Day 04  Six Senses Lodge  Punakha “Flying Farmhouse Amidst Rice Fields”

The next day morning, which is your second day at Punakha, the real adventure will begin with a climb to the 17th-century Chorten Ningpo. After praying before the Maitreya Buddha, you can explore the artistic excellence of the images, depicting the chronological lineage of the gurus (lamas) and the legend of the “Divine Madman”.

Your next stop will be Khabasa Village to see the Buddhist education institution, established in 2005, catering to orphans, educating them on Western subjects and traditional Buddhist scriptures.

After lunch, start for the popular destination Punakha Dzong. It is also the center of administrative works of Punakha District.  This place is located in the beautiful Punakha-Wangdue Valleys, at the confluence of the two rivers, Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu. After the day’s touring, return to the Six Senses property to enjoy a footbath or meditate at the spa.

 

Day 05   Six Senses Lodge  Punakha “Flying Farmhouse Amidst Rice Fields”

The next day morning, you can go for a bicycle ride tracing the trails of the valley to enjoy the unparalleled beauty of Punakha. Visit DorjiLhuendrup Nunnery in TaloNobgang Village (birthplace of the 4 queen mothers) after enjoying a traditional lunch by the river.

DorjiLhuendrup Nunnery used to be the residence of the Tibetan Lama where the nuns of Nobgang Monastery meditate now.

In the afternoon, visit the fifteenth-century fertility temple, Chimi Lhakhang. Many couples, aspiring to start a family, often take this walk to the temple as a religious course. After visiting the temple m return to our lodge to continue experiencing the breathtaking vistas of the valley.

 

Day 06  Six Senses Lodge Punakha to  Six Senses Lodge  Paro

On the sixth day morning, complete your breakfast early and head back to Paro. On the way, visit Simtokha Dzong, the kingdom’s first dzong. This place houses a clay-made Buddha statue and a few wall paintings.

At the juncture of two rivers, PhaChhu and WangChhu, visit the Chuzom bridge and the 3 shrines characterized by Nepali, Tibetan, and Bhutanese architecture.

After reaching Paro, enjoy your lunch at a local eatery and pay a visit to the famous Rinpung Dzong, a fortress known for its collection of jewels. This is where the Bhutanese festival Paro Tshechu takes place.

Walk down to the sixteenth-century wooden bridge, NyamaiZampa, connecting Paro town with the dzong. Visit Paro National Museum to explore the ancient Tibetan cotton paintings (Thangkas), and the heritage gallery housing several relics of historical importance.

The festival masks kept according to the festival dances can be a scary spectacle at the first glance. Return to Six Senses Paro after the day’s tiring schedule and enjoy the evening witnessing the changing shades of the sky from the living room of the lodge.

 

Day 07 Six Senses Lodge Paro

On the seventh day, before hiking to Jele Dzong, take a stroll through the pine forests and apple orchards encircling the property. JeleDzong is a curiously designed fortress, placed on the back of the ridge. It served the people traveling from Pro to Thimphu and back during the sixteenth century.

Today, yak herders and nomads trod on this path from time to time. After returning to the lodge, enjoy your evening at the spa. For dinner, you can explore the Indian menu for a taste twist.

 

Day 08   Six Senses Lodge Paro

The eighth day of your stay in Bhutan will be one of the most exciting days as you will visit the world-famous Tiger’s Nest (Taktsang Goemba) that day. This monastery sits on the cliff face almost 2950 feet above the valley.

Your guide will undoubtedly tell you the legends associated with this place. You will enjoy the hike through the thick pine forests as much as the majestic monastery itself.  Your climb up and down the monastery will be the entire day’s activity.

Hence, you will come down and enjoy the rest of the day at the lodge. If you wish, we can arrange for an exclusive dinner experience by setting up the eating arrangement by the twelfth-century stone ruins.

Day 1: Paro /Thimphu

Painting School, which preserves our traditional paintings, sculpturing, and wood curving; Textile museum, the artistic handworks of Bhutanese women. 12th-centuryth century Changangkha temple, Takin-Bhutan’s national animals. National emporium etc. Evening visits Centenary Park for a leisure walk where locals gather.

Drive above Thimphu city, pass the Mothithang area, and drop by the Takin Reserve to see our national animal Takin, which is endemic only to the Himalayan ranges. The unique animal supposed to have the body of a cow and the head of a goat, is believed to have been created by Divine Madman out of his supernatural power. The peace road finishes at the broadcast tower, which further up is adorned by fluttering prayer flags. The view of south Thimphu from here is superb. The trail heads up for a while and detours to right through the apple orchard and a few farmhouses above the trail. From here the trail drops down gently through oak, blue pine, and rhododendron until you will reach Wangditse monastery. Day 3: Thimphu -Paro

After breakfast proceeds to Paro and visit Ta Dzong (national Museum); Then walk down the trail to see Rinpung Dzong (the fortress of the heap of Jewels built in the 17th century), traditionally this is the office of the district governor’s and the living place for monks.  Evening visit The Paro Street  and Vegitable market where the people come from  villages and sell their vegetables etc.

Day 4: Paro sightseeing

Morning hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger Nest ), the hike takes about an hour uphill till the viewpoint and another hour to the main complex.  Initially, Guru Rinpoche visited and meditated in 8th century at this particular site. The Desi Tenzin Rabgye later built the temple in the 17th century. If time permits you can also visit ruined DrukgyelDzong, the place of historic war between Tibet and Bhutan in 17th century; KyichuLhakhang, built in 7th century during the reign of the first Buddhist Tibetan king.

Day 1:  Paro-Thimphu by Car

After you arrive at Paro International Airport, our guide will welcome you and take you for a 1-hour long drive along the valley of Paro and Thimphu Rivers. Your destination for the day will be Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city.

On your way, you can stop by Tamchhog Lhakhang, a heritage place in Bhutan. Locals worship and pay offerings to the builder of the iron bridge here.  Spend the night at Thimphu.

Day 2: Thimphu

The next day morning, explore Thimphu’s tourist attractions like National Memorial Chorten, the National Painting School, The National Library, Changangkha Temple and Buddha Point. You can also pay a visit to the Folk Museum and the National Textile Museum to witness the heritage weaving patterns of Bhutan.

Day 3: Thimphu-Punakha

On the third day morning, you will start for a picturesque valley known for its unparalleled beauty – Punakha Valley. In old times, this place had its fame as the winter capital of the country. On your way to Punakha valley, stop at Dochu La Pass.

From this place, you can catch a glimpse of Gangkar Punsum, Bhutan’s highest mountain. After beholding the unforgettable beauty of the lofty Himalayas, descend to the valley. The path to the valley passes through a lush green forest until you reach Punakha valley.

After some refreshments, get ready to visit Punakha Dzong, a medieval temple that undoubtedly impresses every visitor.  The strategic location of this temple at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers offers this structure an additional dose of splendor.

Day-4: Punakha to Wangdue Excursion

The fourth day morning will begin with a visit to the Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple. The entire day’s itinerary will cover a complete tour of Wangdue. According to legends, the famous lama Drukpa Kunley subdued Dochu La Demoness with the help of his wisdom’s magic thunderbolt.

In Chimi Lhakhang, you will see Drukpa Kunley’s wooden effigy. Childless women visit this temple to get blessings. Reaching here is not an arduous task. It takes around 20 minutes on foot if you walk across the rice fields adjacent to Sopsokha road.

Your scenic path to the temple will cross a quaint village called Pana. You will find the prayer wheels and a few magnificent slate carvings in the temple. Before driving back to Punakha in the evening, you can visit the Wangduephordang to admire the well-maintained fortress.

Day-5: Punakha- Paro

On the fifth day, you will start your journey to Paro after breakfast. On your way, you can take pictures of the beautiful surroundings.  Your journey will come to a short halt for lunch at a good restaurant before reaching Paro. After reaching Paro, you can explore the nearby markets, roads, farmhouses, villages and more to get acquainted with the place.

Day-6: Paro Full Day sightseeing

The sixth day of your Bhutan itinerary will include a visit to the famous e National Museum and Paro Rinpung Dzong. After lunch, visit Drukgyel Dzong, also known as the fortress of victory and a sacred temple named Kyichu Lhakhang.  Your night stay will be at Paro.

Day-7: Paro-Tiger Nest-Paro

A hike up the steep cliffs of the hill atop which sits the famous monastery, Tiger’s Nest will be your seventh day’s first spot to visit. The hiking can be a little taxing but the magnificent vistas the place offers takes away every trace of tiredness you gather hiking.

When you return, you may stop at the Dumtse Lhakhang. Thangthong Gyalpo, known as the builder of the iron bridge in Bhutan, built this temple. Stay in Paro overnight.

Day-8:  Paro – Kathmandu (Nepal) By Druk Air / Bhutan Airlines

On the eighth day morning, you will depart for Paro International Airport to catch your flight to Nepal’s Kathmandu. Once you reach Kathmandu, our guide will take you to the hotel and after lunch, you can visit the local market and the sacred Hindu temple.

Day-9: Kathmandu ( Nepal)

The next day morning, your tour in Kathmandu will begin with a visit to Kathmandu Durbar Square in the older part of the city. This historical place houses the Royal palace the royal family once used as their residence and a few temples boasting medieval architecture.

After visiting Kumari house, a temple in Nepal that the locals believe to be the abode of Nepal’s living Goddess, you will reach the Swayambhunath Stupa perched on a hillock. In the afternoon, our guide will take you to Patan, one of the primary principalities of the medieval era.

Known as the city of art and craft, this place will undoubtedly take you to a forgotten time. A visit to Golden Temple, Mahaboudha Temple, Kumbheshwar Temple, and Macchindranath Temple will also remain included in the day’s itinerary.

If you love the mountains and wish to catch a glimpse of the mighty Mt. Everest from a helicopter flying over it, you need to book the ride in advance. The cost per passenger would be around $205 and the ride will last for an hour.

Day-10: Kathmandu ( Nepal)

The tenth day morning will begin with a visit to the sacred and famous Pashupatinath Temple. The temple sits on the banks of the river Bagmati which flows southwards to finally meet the Ganges.  The ancients Ghats, the three-layered roof, and the meditating ascetics of the temple will instantly offer a spiritual vibe clubbed with a sense of peace.

One of the most sacred Hindu temples, Pashupatinath allows only Hindus to enter its inner precincts. After paying your offerings at Pashupatinath, you will reach Boudhanath, a fourteen hundred years old Stupa.

It is the largest Stupa in Nepal and attracts several Buddhists around the year.  It has a large white stone encircled by 108 Buddha statues. Many pilgrims come to this place to pay their offerings to Lord Buddha and spin the prayer wheels as they circumambulate the dome-shaped Stupa.

After the morning’s spiritual lift, start your afternoon with a visit to Bhaktapur City. One of the well-preserved Malla dynasty principalities, you will find Durbar Square with Golden Gates, Royal Bath, a number of other temples, and the Palace of the 55 Windows here.

The intricate woodcarvings on these structures demand attention and admiration for sure. You will also find the extraordinary structure of Nyatapola Temple, which, even the 1934 earthquake could not shatter.

The next destination would be Dutratraya Temple followed by the Pujarimath complex featuring its signature east-end peacock window. After experiencing the medieval charm of Bhaktapur City, you will visit Pottery Square and Taumadhi Square.

On Your arrival in Bhutan is an unmatched experience as the flight circles over the spectacular valley below. The transfer to Thimphu is approximately 1½ hours. Upon arrival and following lunch, visit your choice of the National Memorial Chorten, the National Textile Museum, the Folk Heritage Museum and the National Library then stroll the main street browsing for interesting Himalayan artefacts and textiles. DAY 2: THIMPHU

After breakfast, visit the north end of the valley to view Trashi Chhoe Dzong, the seat of Bhutan’s government and Royal offices, and Pangri Zampa, two 16th-century buildings that now house a monastic training school for astrologers. At the head of the valley, should you wish to stretch your legs, a short hike will take you to Cheri Goemba, the monastery where the first monastic body was established in the Kingdom. Back in town, visit a few of the capital’s cottage industries ranging from traditional paper making to hand-rolled incense. (Overnight: Amankora Thimphu).

DAY 3: THIMPHU TO GANGTEY

An early departure leads to a dramatic drive over the 3,050m mountain pass of Dochu La and on to Phobjika Valley. Sights on the way include one of Bhutan’s first fortress monasteries, the 17th-century Simtokha Dzong, and ancient wall paintings at the Hongtsho Goemba monastery. The journey continues over the pass where on a clear day, towering Himalayan peaks are easily visible. The descent through Punakha Valley along the Kingdom’s only east-west highway passes the scenic village of Wangdi, then climbs through forests of bamboo and oak. Just before crossing the Pele La Pass, a small side road splinters off to the hidden Phobjika Valley. On arrival, visit the striking Gangtey Goemba, sitting at the head of the valley, and stroll through quaint Gangtey Village. (Overnight: Amankora Gangtey).

DAY 4: EXCURSION PHOBJIKA VALLEY

Spend the morning time visiting the Black Neck Crane Centre where, depending on the season, you will have the chance to view breeding cranes. Various walks or mountain bike rides through this magnificent valley can then be arranged. Soak up the beauty of the valley from the lodge or return to the revered Goemba for a possible audience with the Trulkul, should he be in residence. (Overnight: Amankora Gangtey)

DAY 5: PHOBJIKA TO BUMTHANG

Today’s memorable journey to Jakar (Bumthang) is filled with dramatic landscapes taking in terraced fields, deep river valleys and precariously perched farmhouses viewed from a highway ingeniously carved into the mountain face. Following a brief stop at Chendebji Chorten, believed to cover the remains of a demon spirit, arrive at Trongsa, the original home of the royal family. Visit Trongsa Dzong, the ancestral home to Bhutan’s monarch where novice monks recite mantras or practice on sacred horns, flutes and drums. The drive to Bumthang takes you over the picturesque Yotong La Pass and down into Chhume Valley, home to Bhutan’s famous Yatra weaving. See the weavers create their intricate handiwork and browse the finished textiles. (Overnight: Amankora Bumthang)

DAY 6: EXPLORING BUMTHANG VALLEY

Begin the day by exploring the palace of Wangdichhoeling, home to the second King and the neighbour of Amankora’s Bumthang lodge. Note the auspicious prayer wheels then head up the valley,

Taking in the grand Kurjey Lhakhang, considered one of Bhutan’s most auspicious monuments. Once the resting place of Guru Rimpoche and Jambay Lhakhang, Kurjey Lhakhang is where the early winter festivals are held, drawing thousands of Bhutanese to receive blessings. Head back into town and visit Tamshing Monastery before exploring the valley’s unique cottage industries: Red Panda Brewery, Bumthang Cheese/Dairy Facility and Bumthang Distillery, brewers of numerous distinctive spirits. DAY 7: EXCURSION TO TANG VALLEY – BUMTHANG DISTRICT

Explore further afield with an excursion to the beautiful Tang Valley.

DAY 8: BUMTHANG TO PUNAKHA

Depart early for Amankora’s Punakha lodge. Upon entering Punakha Valley, stop to stretch your legs by strolling to Chimi Lhakhang, an auspicious fertility monastery built in 1499. (Overnight: Amankora Punakha)

DAY 9: EXCURSION TO PUNAKHA VALLEY

In the morning, hike through fields of chillies, cabbages and rice lining the banks of the Mo Chhu to reach the Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, a stunning monument built by the Queen and consecrated in 1999. Returning through the valley.

DAY 10: PUNAKHA TO PARO

After descending from Dochu La Pass, the road will lead back up the dramatic Wang Chu and Paro Chu river valleys before crossing through Paro towards the north end of the valley. Here, set in a pine forest, is the Amankora Paro lodge and spa. In the afternoon, stroll to the nearby ruins, visit some of the valley’s oldest and holiest religious monuments or amble down Paro’s main street. Evenings at Amankora Paro may include informative lectures on the history, religion, flora and fauna of the region, or a film on the Himalayas. (Overnight: Amankora Paro).

DAY 11: PARO VALLEY TOUR

The day starts with a visit to the National Museum, housed in the Ta Dzong (watchtower). Here, a collection of artefacts provides a wonderful introduction to the rich culture and heritage of the Kingdom. Just a short walk downhill lies the dominating Paro Dzong, a fine example of Bhutanese architecture. From the Dzong, cross Nyamai Zampa, a traditional cantilevered bridge, to reach the town temple built in 1525. Enjoy a picturesque picnic or a visit to a traditional farmhouse for lunch with a local family. In the afternoon, hike to one of Bhutan’s most revered monuments, the Taktshang Goemba, more c o m m o n l y known as the “Tiger’s Nest”. The four- to five- hour return trek offers spectacular views of this sacred monastery perched on a cliff face almost 1,000m above the valley floor. (Overnight: Amankora Paro).
